Whether you're already planning a trip to Nias or still considering it, one question soon follows: where to stay?

There are several accommodations along Jalan Sorake. Most are simple guesthouses, some are hotels or resorts, and some are private apartments. Jamburae Lodge is a small, family-run surf accommodation in Nias, directly in front of The Point at Lagundri Bay.

With only seven rooms, Jamburae offers a relaxed atmosphere where guests can enjoy quality accommodation, good food and good waves. The concept behind Jamburae Lodge is to be more than just a place to sleep: a place where people feel at home spending time both in and out of the water, whether that means sharing a meal, watching the waves from the terrace or simply having a quiet afternoon in the garden.

Life Around the Lodge

The rooms are simple, stylish and comfortable, with everything needed for a relaxed stay. They all have reliable air conditioning, private bathrooms with hot showers and quality mattresses with proper bedding. One room even looks directly onto the wave. Breakfast is included each morning and prepared fresh to order, providing an easy start into the day.

Lodge owner Site Wau designed and built all of the furniture in the rooms himself, using coconut wood from the family garden. Beds, tables, chairs and wardrobes were made specifically for the lodge, giving every room its own simple and natural character.

But what often makes a stay at Jamburae especially memorable happens outside the room.

The main terrace overlooks Lagundri Bay and is often the first place guests check the surf in the morning. The spacious garden offers plenty of shade and places to relax. At the end of the garden, a platform above the boat parking has become a favorite spot for yoga, stretching, reading or watching the evening surf.

There is also a lounge area with wave view, making it easy to get some work done while still keeping an eye on the surf. A billiard table, table tennis, a small bar and plenty of places to sit outside give guests plenty of options to spend time between sessions. The shared spaces make it easy to meet other travelers, while still leaving plenty of room for those who prefer a quieter pace.

One of the lodge's most appreciated features is the private jetty, which provides direct access across the reef and into the lineup. It allows guests to enter and exit the water without needing to walk on the reef, making getting in and out of the water easy.

At the end of the jetty is a natural reef pool where both children and adults can swim safely. It is also a favorite place to hang out and to watch the sunset surf.

In the evenings, guests can join a communal dinner with a changing menu of fresh fish, vegetables, curries, tempeh and tropical fruits. Vegetarian, vegan and other dietary requests are no problem.

Dinner often becomes a meeting point. Stories from the day are shared, surf sessions are discussed and guests who have just arrived quickly get to know the others. The billiard table, table tennis and communal spaces often keep those conversations going long after dinner has finished.

The Surf

The main reason most visitors come to Sorake is the wave. The Point is directly in front of the lodge and can be checked from almost everywhere on the property. Whether you're having breakfast, reading in the garden or working from the lounge, the wave is always in sight. When conditions look good, it's easy to grab the board and head straight into the water.

For guests who want support in the water, surf lessons, coaching and board rentals are available. For beginners, the nearby beachbreak offers a mellow and easy alternative to the main break.

The owners Petra and Site surf themselves, so conversations about conditions, tides and swell forecasts are simply part of daily life around the lodge. They are always happy to share their local knowledge, explain conditions or help guests find the best option for their level.

Who Usually Stays Here?

Jamburae attracts a wide variety of travellers: Surfers of all levels, whether travelling solo or with friends, couples, families, remote workers and long-term guests on a sabbatical, stay at Jamburae throughout the year. They come from all over the world, but many seem to appreciate the same things: a relaxed atmosphere, a comfortable place by the wave and the sense of feeling at home away from home.

Many end up staying longer than originally planned. Others became regular guests. Some came for the wave and came back for the atmosphere.
